A computer can slow down, show errors, become infected or simply need a complete reinstall. In these situations it is not always enough to copy documents and photos: you often also need to restore the operating system, programs, drivers and all the settings that make the computer truly ready to use.
That is why at TekCare360 we use Clonezilla: a tool designed to create and restore complete images of disks and partitions. A good system image makes it possible to return to a working configuration without starting from scratch every time.
What is Clonezilla?
Clonezilla is open-source software for disk and partition imaging and cloning. It is not normally used as an application opened inside Windows: it starts from a USB stick or another bootable medium, so it can work on the disk without the main operating system running.
During saving, Clonezilla collects the information needed to rebuild the selected disk or partition. A complete copy may include the partition structure, system data, boot information and files in the saved areas. The result is not just a folder of documents, but an image that can return the computer to an earlier state.
- Create complete images of a disk or individual partitions
- Restore the system to a new or previously erased disk
- Clone directly from one disk to another
- Save to a second disk, external drive or compatible network location
- Compress the image to reduce the required space
- Verify the saved image before considering it ready for recovery
A system image and a file backup are not the same thing
A traditional file backup is mainly used to preserve documents, photos, videos and other personal data. A Clonezilla image has a different purpose: it captures the technical state of a disk or partition at a particular moment.
The two solutions complement each other. The image can quickly get the computer working again, while a file backup protects data created after the image was made. For this reason we do not recommend trusting all important documents exclusively to a recovery partition or a single image.
The TekCare360 procedure: a configuration ready to restore
When we configure a computer, one of the most useful procedures is to create a technical snapshot of the system after completing the main tasks. This means we preserve not just a newly installed Windows system, but a base already prepared for that particular machine.
- Check the general state of the disk and hardware
- Clean installation of the operating system
- Install updates, drivers and required components
- Configure the main settings and peripherals
- Install the essential tools agreed with the customer
- Clean temporary files and check that startup is correct
- Create the Clonezilla image with an identifiable name, date and configuration
- Verify the image and keep at least one separate copy
The image is created in a state that is as clean and documented as possible. If it already contains the customer's personal data, it must be handled with the same care as any other backup. In many cases it is preferable to use the recovery partition for the basic configuration and keep personal documents in separate backups.
The internal recovery partition
On some computers we can prepare a partition dedicated to recovery. It stores an image of a working configuration, possibly together with instructions and information useful for identifying the system version. The partition can be hidden during everyday use, reducing the risk of it being changed or deleted by mistake.
This solution is convenient because the image is already on the computer: in the event of serious software problems, recovery can be faster and there is no need to look for an external drive immediately. It should not, however, be considered absolute protection. If the main disk fails, is replaced or suffers serious damage, the internal partition may be lost too.
How does a recovery work?
When the system is no longer reliable, the computer is started with Clonezilla Live and the correct image is selected. After carefully identifying the destination disk, Clonezilla rebuilds the expected structure and restores the image data. At the end, the boot medium is removed and the first system start is checked.
Choosing the destination disk is a delicate step: recovery can overwrite existing partitions and data. Before proceeding it is therefore essential to identify the right medium and, where possible, secure any data that is still needed.
Clonezilla can also be used when changing disks
An image can also be useful when replacing an old hard drive with an SSD. Instead of reinstalling everything manually, you can create an image of the original disk and restore it to the new medium, then check that the system recognises the hardware correctly and starts normally.
Cloning or recovery does not turn every computer into a universal copy. Major changes in hardware, boot mode, storage controller or system configuration may require additional work. That is why we always assess compatibility before considering an image as a solution for a different machine.
What Clonezilla does not do
- It is not a continuous backup that runs automatically while you work
- It does not replace a separate backup of documents and photos
- It does not protect an image stored on a disk that could fail along with the computer
- It does not make a backup safe if the image was created while the system was infected or compromised
- It does not let you restore an image to the wrong disk without consequences
- It does not guarantee that a configuration will work without adjustments on completely different hardware
Good practices for a genuinely useful image
- Create the image after completing updates and configuration
- Clearly record the date, computer model and image contents
- Verify the save before considering the procedure complete
- Keep a copy on a separate external medium
- Do not leave the only copy permanently connected to the computer
- Repeat the image after important system changes
- Test the recovery procedure periodically
- Protect any personal data that may be present in the image
Fast recovery starts with careful preparation
Clonezilla is a very effective tool, but its value depends on image quality and backup organisation. A well-prepared recovery partition can reduce intervention time and quickly return a computer to a stable configuration. An external copy and documented procedure complete the protection.
At TekCare360 we use this approach to make support more organised, transparent and repeatable: first we build a working base, then we preserve it so it can be restored when needed.
